The lyrics describe the simultaneous pleasure and pain the speaker gets from music. Flea’s signature slap bass line is accompanied by Dave Navarro’s crunchy rhythm guitar and, late in the song, a children’s chorus. Off of the much-maligned One Hot Minute comes one track that has withstood the whips and scorns of time. So, disclaimers aside, here are the 15 Chili Peppers tracks most worth listening to here and now… 15. While these tracks made an impact upon their initial release, they don’t really hold up for me now. No “Otherside”, “Californication”, or “My Friends”? Nope. There are plenty of hits conspicuously missing. Although I find these first efforts interesting, they don’t really resonate with me emotionally. True, I didn’t include any tracks from the first three records. There is obviously plenty here to spark debate. The following list simply reflects the 15 Chili Peppers songs that I most frequently return to. However, the band has unquestionably produced some of the most memorable and influential rock songs of the past couple decades. I have often found the Chili Peppers’ records to be inconsistent efforts, sometimes overly long and in need of a collaborative editor/psychoanalyst. The band’s Stadium Arcadium (2006) was their most sprawling record to date, a two-disc set that spawned multiple hits. The album was notable for the increased artistic presence of Frusciante, with the musician often layering multiple guitar parts and writing string arrangements for several songs. By the Way (2002) spawned five hit singles and saw the band continue their lyrical approach. The album was more melodic and thematically unified than previous efforts. Californication (1999) was the Chili Pepper’s big comeback, with three #1 Modern Rock singles and widespread critical acclaim. In 1998, though, Frusciante, fresh out of rehab, agreed to rejoin the band. While their next album, One Hot Minute (1995), was a commercial success, its downtrodden lyrics and pseudo-psychedelic guitar sounds failed to impress critics.Īfter Navarro’s departure from the group, the Chili Peppers were on the brink of splitting up. Guitarist John Frusciante, not keen to deal with the band’s newfound stardom, abruptly left the group and was replaced by former Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro. The confessional single “Under the Bridge” reached the #2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became one of the defining alternative rock songs of the 1990s. With the Rick Rubin-produced Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991), the Red Hot Chili Peppers became rock stars for the masses. Mother’s Milk (1989) garnered critical praise for the mature, introspective nature of tracks like “Higher Ground” and “Knock Me Down”. These records did establish the Chili Peppers’ signature early sound, though, funky grooves coupled with a punk rock attitude. The group’s first three albums, Red Hot Chili Peppers (1984), Freaky Styley (1985), and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987), helped the group gain an underground following, yet failed to break through to the mainstream. Slovak and Irons were ultimately replaced with John Frusciante (guitar) and Chad Smith (drums). Slovak tragically died of a heroin overdose in 1988, after which Irons also left the band. The Los Angeles group formed in 1983 and featured original members Anthony Kiedis (vocals), Flea (bass), Hillel Slovak (guitar), and Jack Irons (drums). Few bands from the alternative era have not only survived but thrived, like the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Mesa Arch, Before and After Exposure Blending With Luminosity Masks Then the blending process is a little bit trickier. The only challenge you may have, which is also a challenge when using HDR software, is if you have moving leaves on trees, for example, between exposures. Since you use a base exposure, which will be done for most of your images, and simply reduce specific highlights and shadows, there shouldn’t be any ghosting. Halos simply don’t exist in luminosity mask exposure blending if you’ve done it correctly.Īs for ghosts, you will rarely encounter a moving object that is difficult to blend. I used an exposure two stops brighter and, with luminosity masks, I easily painted details back into this area. If I ran my exposures through an HDR program, all of the highlights in the image would have been affected to some degree, which is exactly what I didn’t want.įor the darker areas, I only wanted to bring back information in one area, the side building to the right, which is noticeably dark. I very gently blended in three darker exposures to gain a little bit of control in those areas, without darkening them too much. Through bright lights like this night cityscapes are able to give off a lot of energy and dynamism. The only highlights I wanted to control in the image were the street lights, and even then I still wanted them to be bright. This is the major reason why so many are turning to luminosity masking to create natural, balanced HDRs. You do not affect any colour changes, you retain absolute sharpness, you don’t flare up noise (which means you can shoot at a much higher ISO), and you will not exaggerate chromatic aberration. In other words, your final blended image will be, more or less, exactly the same image quality as your RAW files. You do not affect any other part of the image. When exposure blending with luminosity masks, you’re working only with the RAW files to restore highlights and shadows. One guaranteed way to avoid the poor image quality we normally associate with HDR is to manually blend your exposures in Photoshop using luminosity masks. We’ve all seen over-saturated, noisy, messy, HDR images. In this article we’ll take a look at the benefits and challenges of luminosity masks versus HDR software. If you’re new to luminosity mask exposure blending, you can see a beginner’s tutorial on dPS in my previous article: Exposure Blending Using Luminosity Masks Tutorial In fact, luminosity masking has become an exciting buzz-term in the world of digital photography, and there’s good reason for that. However, a large number of photographers are beginning to take the blending process into their own hands, and produced beautifully balanced HDRs using luminosity masks, probably the cleanest alternative to HDR software. HDR programs are attempting to tidy up their processes to meet the needs of the demanding HDR photographer. The goal, among many, is now a clean HDR look.
